******Bring knives to the Club Mtg. to sell, trade or show******
Next meeting is Monday, May 22nd… Because the fourth Monday this month falls so early, you might just miss the fact that our next meeting is only a few days away. So, get out your calendars and mark Monday week, the 22nd as meeting day right now. Other wise you might miss the great refreshments that Cindy Marcus volunteered to bring for the meeting as well as the great fellowship we always enjoy. One of the friendly faces, Tom Porter, has reappeared but a lot of the old faces that were around for a long time like Ralph Martin and D. D. Hunt we have not seen in as while. The weather is pleasant and a great time for these as well as Ty Pulliam, Dave & Lois Thomas, Wendell and Mary McCall, and Bennie Watts to name a few to show up. As always, we will start gathering around 6:30 PM at the Tucker Georgia Power Operating Center although the official meeting won’t start until 7:30. But a lot did that extra hour to lay out their knives they want to show or sell/trade and spent some time looking over their friend’s offerings. Looking forward to seeing a lot of us turn out for this meeting so we might know how many hands we can count upon to help with the Great Southern Knife Show, Year Two.
******And bring someone to share our Club’s fellowship******
Speaking of the Great Southern Knife Show, 2006… Don Stroud, Show Chair, told us that Blade Magazine, Knife World and Knife Illustrated had all agreed to place notice of our Second Annual Show in their Calendars and he was trying to track down Tactical Knife. He shared that we had received $825 to reserve tables with H. S. being the first money received. Don stated that he hoped to send out all the vendors who had participated last year a vendor packet by the end of April and he was producing flyer hand outs that would be ready for the Eastman Gun and Knife Show at the first of May. (They were and a lot were passed out at this show.) Don had also contacted the management folks of the Blade Show in June and requested that we be allowed a table outside the Entrance Door to promote the October Show. This request was denied but we can distribute flyers about the show passively on the table outside the door. And inside we will have the Club table as well as member’s tables distributing our Shows flyers. In addition, we will continue the Raffle for the Painted Pony given to us by Mike Prather that was begun at the Eastman Show in order to build a master list of possible attendee’s names and return mail cards. And, good news for the future, the April 12th issue of the AJC carried a story on page B 1 that the Cobb County Commission had reversed their earlier decision and decided that the Cobb County Civic Center would remain open. They requested that staff make stronger efforts to market it and to different groups. Because of losses the last four years, it will certainly cost more to rent it in the future, but it will remain available for our knife show as well as other events. And that is great as stability of dates and location means a great deal when you are trying to grow a show. Don should have a better handle on what is needed in volunteers shortly and will be putting out a call for our “hands” to help his shortly.
*****Sharing our Club is half the fun-bring a friend*****
Welcome our newest member… Tom Gobel was brought in by Leroy Matthews. Tom is a collector of mainly Little, McCarty, Crockford, Hedegous, POP, and Pug (Georgia custom knife makers). He lives in Snellville on New London Place. He is known to many of us because of his attendance at knife shows as well as Gobels Knife Exchange. Welcome, Tom! And while on new members, Eric Thacker shared I booted it on his website in April’s newsletter. The address I gave will be up in the fall, but not now! Pg. 2 continued – CCC May, 2006 newsletter
*****What knives are you bringing to share with us on the 22nd? **** around the Club… There are a whole lot of thanks due to a host of people for efforts above and beyond recently: Kudos to Jan and Ed for the Chili brought to the April meeting as a lot of us enjoyed a great meal Hats off to Cindy Marcus for all her hard work assisting Don on the GSKS to date Applause is due Cindy and Jimmy, Teresa K. and Bruce and Jerry for manning the Club table at May Eastman show A cheer for Gary K. for joining Leroy and H. S. on donating a Randall for the Club to raffle at the Oct. show A hand for Jimmy Marcus for donating four (4) knives to the Club’s raffle (Gary can still use more) And, for all I have missed, a HURRAH for you too! Ben Powell shared with us that Becky is forging ahead, battling her disease with a good spirit and plenty of fortitude. We all need to keep her in our prayers as she completes her chemo treatments and possibly faces surgery ahead. # Leroy reports that he was able to honor the request of the Texas gentleman of Capt. Bruce that someone in the Club assist him by selling him a Brown and Pharr. The wife later reported to Leroy that her mate was just as happy as could be now that he had a Brown & Pharr to carry once again. All is well that ends well. # Ed Giles shared that Randall has had to institute a new policy based upon demand of restricting collectors to buying a maximum of four knives per year from the shop. Must be nice when you have “built” that better mouse trap and can’t handle demand. Randall is now 52 weeks behind in deliveries. # Leroy has come across a piece of wood from mount Arafat and will bring it to the Club shortly. # Winners of last meeting’s raffles were Leroy M. taking home a beautiful Jerry Bodner miniature donated by Jerry and Capt. Bruce struck again winning the Kershaw donated by Gary K. # It was decided to order only 40 of the 2006 Al Mar Club knife if permitted based upon payments received for reserved knives: we will increase the order to 50 if we must to get the price and the manufacture as specified. A lot of you will probably miss owning one of these outstanding knives. # Club annual dues of $25 per adult member are now past due. Need I say more? # There is a long download in this of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers May Newsletter which states on page 3 that there is a meeting May 29th at Wayne Hensley’s home that he meant to invite all at CCC to attend at April meeting. He forgot so we are doing this way by sending you another attachment. You don’t need to download this attachment if you are tied up on that date. You need to call Wayne at 770-483-8938 to confirm if you are going as he needs to have a count to order lunch.
****Think which of your friends would enjoy our hobby and fellowship***** a tip from eBay…
1timberone covered a subject that many collectors have asked themselves, “How much should I pay?’ for a knife. His answer follows: “Never pay more than you can afford to lose. While the collectible knife market has for the most part shown a steady increase in value over the years, not every knife that you purchase is going to show profit. The common sense approach would be, if you go out and purchase four mass produced, made in China copies of a well known design for $25 each, 10 years from now those same knives are most likely going to worth $25 each - if you are lucky. Now take that same $100 and purchase a well known limited edition American, German or Japanese make design and keep it 10 years. It’s a pretty safe bet the value of the knife could double or triple. You can find excellent quality knives that will continue to rise in value from $50 to several hundred. But buyers beware: there are a lot of crooks out there that will sell you a fake. If a seller won’t accept returns, be careful. If a seller insists on cash only type payments, BEWARE! If they seem to mislead or have contradictory info, DON’T BUY!
